Like many other big races, the 2015 Reedy International Off-Road Race of Champions uses controlled tires to help level the playing field and help with overall costs for the participants. Any 2.2″ wheel can be used, but only provided JConcepts 2WD tires and Pro-Line 4WD tires may be used. This mixture works pretty well, but the extra rules associated make for even tighter racing and control. Modifying and/or grinding and/or cutting any tire is illegal and foam inserts must be used in the intended tires. This means planning time to allow for the tires to “break-in” needs to well planned out and not even “scrubbing in” is allowed. Two 3mm vent holes per tire are allowed and Invitational Class drivers must use the impound area for their tires at the end of each day. Saucing of the tires is similarly strict with a controlled sauce only allowed and applied in a designated area. Overall, it seems everyone is welcoming the rules and hopefully it will help push the other big events to take on similar ideas.
